Description

In July 1996, the Spanish cycling crowd was rudely awakened from a five-year slumber: a little-known Danish cyclist, Bjarne Riis, dethroned Miguel Indurain from his long reign in the Tour de France. Since then, the figure of Riis has not abandoned the forefront of world cycling news, although his career as a cyclist, and then as a team owner, cannot be considered exactly an example of placidity and stability. From the sporting and vital peak that victory meant for Riis, his career has been a real personal and professional roller coaster. Brilliant moments alternate in it, such as the successes of his cycling team, culminating in the victory of Carlos Sastre in the 2008 Tour, with dramatic episodes, such as his failure in the 1997 Tour, his controversial role during the tragicomedy of the edition 1998, his doping confession in 2007, and the suspension of his star runner, Alberto Contador, following the infamous clenbuterol affair. In Clouds and clearings, Bjarne Riis unfolds a true exercise in catharsis, a kind of self-exorcism, which is surprising for its crudeness, its detail and its sincerity.
