Montana Colors, the most versatile spray paint you'll ever know

Graffiti product development

As director of the Felton paint company in 1993, Jordi Rubio decided to carry out a thorough market study of the situation in the paint industry. He carefully studied the offerings of other companies and discovered a small neighborhood store in Barcelona that sold a significant amount of spray paint. The business caught Jordi's attention and he decided to visit it to explore possible collaborations.

Upon entering the store, Jordi was shocked to see that the business was primarily dedicated to selling gardening products. The store clerk was a young graffiti artist well liked in the graffiti community named Moockie. Working alongside him was his friend Kapi, another renowned graffiti artist from Barcelona. Their passion for art and drawing attracted other graffiti artists and became a point of attraction for other young people looking for sprays for the new urban phenomenon on the rise: graffiti. The gardening components took a back seat and sales of the color sprays skyrocketed.

Jordi Rubio quickly grasped the idea of the young graffiti artists and decided to start developing products dedicated to graffiti for his paint company. At that time, graffiti was considered vandalism and the idea of manufacturing sprays did not interest his colleagues at Felton. Rejection was not an impediment for Jordi, and together with his partner Miquel Galea, they decided to leave the company to found their own spray paint business: Montana Colors.

Born to defend graffiti art

Montana's goal was to offer sprays in as wide a range of colors as possible and to defend the art of graffiti, considered an act of vandalism at the time. Before developing their sprays, they talked to different graffiti artists to learn first-hand about their suggestions and needs. Thanks to them, they launched the first aerosol spray can manufactured with the intention of being used for graffiti.

The tireless research and development of Montana Colors

Montana Colors products have improved over time since the first spray dedicated exclusively to urban art was launched in 1994. Later, in 1996, Jordi designed a new spray with a valve that stood out for its power and speed. Before launching this product on the market, he showed his invention to Moockie for testing. Kapi, who was also present, exclaimed "how hardcore!" when he saw the result. The reaction came from so deep inside him that Montana decided to name the sprays with this valve Hardcore.

A year after the launch of the Hardcore sprays, they also developed the Donut, a color identification system in the shape of a washer that made it possible to identify the exact color of the spray at a glance. This ingenious invention changed the way spray colors were identified.

Their tireless research is still ongoing, even promoting the first low-pressure spray, the MTN 94. But they didn't stop there, their latest launch is the Water Based sprays, which use the spray base paint mixed with water for the purpose of using it as a craft spray.
