Which Single-Speed Bike to buy?

Single speed bicycles, also called single gears, are bicycles with a single speed that do not have a sprocket set or gears. By mounting both brakes and a freewheel, the weight is reduced, the chances of breakdowns are reduced and maintenance is kept to a minimum...

They are efficient, fun, economical and, as we say, easy to maintain. If you want to enjoy pedalling and move around the city or on flat terrain without complications, this type of bicycle is an excellent option.

Difference between fixie and single-speed

When talking about single-speed bikes, it is important to understand the difference between a fixie and a single-speed. Both share one characteristic: they have a single chainring and a single sprocket. What distinguishes them is precisely this last element: the fixie has a fixed sprocket. This means that the pedals control the rotation of the rear wheel. To go forwards, you pedal forwards. To go backwards, you pedal backwards. To brake, you simply exert force and stop the circular movement of the cranks using the pedals. The speed, both uphill and downhill, depends on the pedalling rhythm. With a fixie, the pedals must constantly rotate.

Single-gear bicycles have a freewheel, which allows the axle to rotate in both directions. Even if you don't pedal or pedal backwards, the wheel continues its inertial motion. This is the most common type of bicycle.

Components and accessories for single-speed

The mechanics of a single-speed is simple: one chainring, one freewheel and two brakes. Most of the bikes in our shop are also equipped with a component called Flip-Flop. This is a system located on the rear hub that allows you to convert a fixie into a single-speed and vice versa. It has two sprockets, one fixed and one freewheel, on each side of the wheel. To change the pedalling mode, just remove the wheel and mount it on the other side. That's how easy it is to have two bikes in one.

If you wish, you can customise the single-speed bikes with numerous accessories, such as baskets, mudguards, lights or paint them with specific sprays.

The best brands in single-speed bicycles

Have you decided to buy a single-gear bike? In that case, we are going to recommend some brands that stand out for their high quality and attractive design. All of them are perfect for moving comfortably and lightly around the city and include the Flip-Flop system on the rear wheel.

  • Santafixie: excellent value for money. Its models offer impeccable design, comfort and lightness.
  • Fuji Bikes: sophisticated, functional and fast. Many of them have road bike handlebars.
