The right Bottom Bracket for your Bike

A bottom bracket is a metallic component located on the lower central part of a bicycle and joins together both crankarms of a crankset.

It’s a crucial part of the bike, as it’s the one on which the pedal movement depends, and one of the components where wear and tear is more present, as it supports the cyclist’s whole weight, oscillating between the right and left sides of the body.

Before you buy a new bottom bracket, make sure it’s compatible with your bike and pay attention to aspects such as its total length, how it’s assembled or what thread it features, among others.

In order to correctly uninstall your current bottom bracket, you will be needing a  bottom bracket remover. Without it, you won’t be able to uninstall it, and you will need to bring the bike to a mechanic.

Bottom bracket kinds

Bottom brackets can be classified in two main categories: either they have a thread, and are further subdivided into other categories; or they don’t have a thread, in which case they are called ahead bottom brackets.

Threaded bottom brackets

According to what kind of thread is on a bottom bracket, it can fall into two different categories:

  • English-threaded bottom bracket: Two lengths can be found when dealing with English-threaded bottom brackets: 68 mm or 73 mm. This is the most common kind of bottom bracket nowadays, and has a 34.8 mm inner diameter. It is always threaded counterclockwise, both on the right and on the left end.
  • Italian-threaded bottom bracket: These bottom brackets have a 36mm diameter and 70mm length, with a clockwise thread on both ends. Italian bottom brackets are less and less common, but some brands are still manufacturing them nowadays.

Ahead bottom brackets

Nowadays, threadless or ahead bottom brackets can also be found in the market. They are the kind most commonly used on road bikes, MTB bikes and some gravel or medium-high-end bikes.

Unlike what happens with threaded bottom brackets, threadless ones are directly mounted on one of the crankarms.

It needs to be perfectly adjusted to the bottom bracket shell in order to prevent dust and water to get in, and so that it can function properly.
