The wheel hub of a bike is the element which supports and rotates the axle. They connect the frame of the bike itself and its wheels.
The hub can have a simpler function if it is a metal cylindrical element which simply supports, or a more complex function if it is a piece made from different components that form a connecting point.
The hub on the wheels of a bike is a key element to guarantee safety during the ride thanks to its rotation system and its capacity to withstand the pressure generated by the wheel itself, depending on the design of the spokes.
There are two types of hubs for bike wheels if you look at the position they are going to adopt: front hubs and rear hubs.
The front hubs of bikes, as their name implies, are fitted to the front wheel and stand out because they don't look the same as rear hubs. For example, here there is no freewheel which, along with the hub, holds the sprocket. The front wheel hubs you can find include those from companies such as BLB or Novatec.
Rear hubs of bikes are fitted to the rear wheel and, unlike the hubs fitted on the front, they are connected to the cassettes of the bike. We can highlight options such as those from the makes Gurpil and Paul Components.

This option of installing a fixed gear hub is suitable for people who are already experienced with bikes because the pedals continue to turn even when you are not pedalling and braking will depend on blocking the wheel with your feet and/or the help of the brakes.
Flip-flop hubs are characterised because they are fixed to one side and free on the other, and allow the position of the wheel to be changed. This type of hub is also known as a double sided hub and, in practice, almost means having two bikes, one fixed and one in free mode.
With the single-speed option, you will get a bike without gears. This possibility is ideal if you use your bike more in an urban setting to avoid traffic jams, but less recommended if you are thinking of riding along more challenging tracks.
The coaster hub, unlike the fixed option enables the rear wheel to turn freely. The coaster hub makes a gentle braking of the wheels possible since pedalling backwards will be enough to manage to reduce the speed gradually.
