How to choose the components for your bike?

In Santafixie, in addition to selling 90% mounted bicycles, we also have the best bicycle components for you (or with the help of a mechanic) to ride yours. We have all the bicycle parts, from the skeleton, that is the frame, to the handlebar tape that best matches the rest of the components. We have a wide variety of parts for your bike and the best deals.

In our online store you can buy all the components you need, but as you may not know where to start, we will help you with this mini guide to choose the components for your bike:

Frame

First of all we must be clear about what type of bike we are going to want to ride, and consequently choose the right frame. We have a wide range of fixie/single-speed bicycle frames to go fast by city, urban or to go comfortably on gravel and all types of terrain. If what we want is a fixie, we can choose between carbon frames to compete, or aluminium or steel for day to day.

Wheels

Once we have a picture we have to choose the rest of the components. We can start with the wheels. If what we are looking for is the minimum weight and greater absorption of impacts, carbon wheels are a good option, but in turn they are fragile.

The best for urban use are those of aluminum, which contain the weight and at the same time are very resistant. They are also cheaper than carbon. You can buy them in a set or separately if you want to combine colors or models.

Tires and tubes

You must also choose the rest of the wheel components: tire and inner tube. The tire is one of the most important components, since it is the only element of your bicycle in contact with the surface on which you are traveling.

If you want better efficiency by sacrificing grip you will have to choose some tires with low profile, and if on the contrary you prefer safety and grip both dry and wet it is better to buy some tires with profile. Sooner or later you will puncture a tire, so we recommend you always have spare tubes, as well as other spare parts for bicycles.

Headsets

As for the handling of the bike, you will need a handlebar, that's obvious. But the rest of the pieces that make up the steering are also necessary. We are talking about the piece that joins the handlebar with the fork, allowing us to turn the wheel.

To adjust the height of the handlebar to the correct position, you must use headset spacers, as well as a suitable stem for your height. Returning to the handlebar, to improve comfort in your hands, it is essential to have good handlebar tape. There are many materials: synthetic, cork, leather, silicone, ... and in a multitude of finishes and designs.

Saddles and seatposts

Another basic component for your comfort on the bicycle, is the saddle. There are different qualities, prices and uses. For example, there are specific ones for men or women, or according to the type of use that we are going to give them. The road ones are usually thinner and harder than the urban ones, which are usually more comfortable but less aerodynamic.

An element where you can save a few grams, is in the seat post, changing it to a carbon one. In addition to providing us with a little more comfort when absorbing the imperfections of the ground, a carbon post is lighter than an aluminum one.

Transmission

We already have almost everything, but something very important is missing: the transmission of the bicycle. On the one hand we have the crankset, joined by the bottom bracket, which allows us to rotate the chainring, which in turn moves the chain. The force transmitted to the chain causes the gear to move, which provides movement to the rear wheel.

If we have a fixie / single-speed it is important to choose a suitable chainring and gear ratio for the environment you normally cycle through. A large chainring of 48 or 49 teeth combined with a small gear of 14 or 15 teeth, will allow us to achieve high speeds in flat areas or within a velodrome.

On the other hand, a small chainring of 44 or 45 teeth combined with a large gear of 18 or 19 teeth will make us climb the slopes more easily to the detriment of lower speed in areas without unevenness.

Straps

Straps are not usually a much demanded bicycle component in more conventional cycling circles, but in Santafixie it is one of the best selling parts. On fixed-gear bicycles nothing less is used to brake. The straps are bands of fabric with a velcro, which adapt to the foot and keep the pedal attached. This way, when making reverse force to the movement of the crank with the pedal, the rear wheel stops turning, skidding and causing the bicycle to brake.

Brakes

If on the contrary we do not carry the single-speed bicycle in fixie mode, that is, with freewheel and brakes, we will need brake pads, brake caliper, cables and levers. The pads are another component that frequently ware out, so it's good to always have a spare one at hand.

Bike Components

Improve the components

One way to improve your bike without changing it for a new one, with an obviously higher cost, is to improve the components. There are bicycles that come from the factory with a good frame, but to reduce costs and in turn the final price, they are mounted with low quality components. Little by little we can change these parts of the bike for better ones while they wear out and it's time to change them.
