Originally published in 2001 in France under the title "Besoin de vélo" and translated in 2003 into English as "Need for the bike", both versions quickly became a great critical and sales success.
As José Gutiérrez says in the prologue, Fournel's writing is easy, simple, entertaining and rather ironic sometimes. All this without giving up or losing any narrative or literary quality. Fournel is a good writer (as well as a passionate cyclist) and this can clearly be seen throughout the text. His agile style, full of changes in rhythm and dynamism, is on a par with the style you should have when riding your bike. With one exception – while riding, he confesses having dropped, fallen or gotten a puncture sometimes. However, as you read him, you won't find a single sign of fatigue as far as the narrative intensity is concerned.
It is definitely one of the best books written to date about cycling and especially about amateur cyclists, those for whom cycling is much more than a passion – it’s become an addiction.
